Until My Brain Begins to Operate Again..

Well last week I had high hopes of getting back on the blogging bandwagon, but...life is freaking crazy. I've written numerous posts in my head that will surely never see the light of day. And now, when I've found a smidgen of a second to actually sit down at the computer and type something out, all I'm finding in my head are fragmented tid bits. So I'll give you an update of sorts...bullet style.

  • Today was my first completely full day on my own and I'm happy to report that everyone made it out alive. There was a point where both boys were crying but I somehow managed to laugh my way through it. I'd set one down on the floor and hold the other then switch. Mom's should really grow an extra pair of hands with each kid they have or better yet, maybe just be cloned. Two is a whole new level of craziness, but I'm sure I'll learn to manage it by the time the next one comes around (yeah, you read that right...I said next one). I look back at my life pre-Jack and wonder what the heck I was complaining about with just the one. Isn't that the way it always goes though?

  • Breastfeeding really needs a whole post to itself. In fact that's what I intended to write about today, but I just don't have it in me anymore. I do have a quick call for help though...Jackson is spitting up after 95% of his feedings and is terribly gassy. He cries for a good half hour or more after every feeding as well and I can't help but think it has something to do with my diet although I don't know what. I'm currently trying to cut out dairy to see if that helps (apparently according to Google it will take 2-3 weeks to find out), but I'd love to know if any of you had suggestions out there? Help. Seriously...suggest away.

  • Jackson has seriously been under documented at this point. I'm fairly sure I have captured every single moment Ethan has ever had until this point. I probably took over 300 pictures of Ethan his first month. This kid is probably lucky to have 75. Jackson...I'm sorry. I will try to do better!

  • Claire Danes and her post baby body made me feel like a total pig last night. She is 3.5 weeks postpartum (a whole .5 weeks less than me) and looked completely back to normal. Although I feel like I've done better this time around, I am very, very far from normal at this point. Stars really should share their secrets. It's unfair to the rest of us. Ugh, I am ready to kick this baby belly to the curb!

  2. My little girl had the same exact thing! Hers turned out to be GERD. They originally thought reflux or colic. Does he arch his back when he cries after? I thought it was dairy as well but they discovered reflux first thankfully. Mama has to have her ice cream! If that is it, keeping him in a 45 degree angle for 30-45 mins

  3. Will help him greatly! If he naps during that time, elevate the crib. The rock n play sleeper was a lifesaver for us. Just a suggestion! Hoping it isn't reflux, it's rough.

  4. So glad to hear you are nursing! It could be a forceful letdown. Try leaning back while nursing to slow down the flow. I think I've also read lying down is good. Kellymom.com is a phenomenal resource, try searching that site, too.

  5. I cut out dairy too in the early months. It seemed to help my lil one's BM.

Our chiropractor told me I should start to notice a change in 3-4 days, but it could be 2 weeks before the dairy totally left my system. She said to try it for a month total and I should know. But, babies change rapidly in a month (maturing digestive systems, etc.)

The biggest help I had in the early weeks for the spitting up and fussiness was getting adjustments for Avery by the chiropractor. She really made all the difference in those early weeks for us. Its like everytime I left there it was a completely different baby.

  7. In bullet form:

    I cut out dairy/soy.
We had W reclined after eating for 20-30 minutes.
He eventually had to be on reflux medication but it was due to lack of weight gain.
We loved using Gripe Water to help his belly!
I also had a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance and forceful letdown. I would express milk before into a burp cloth or even pump an ounce or so if I could before feeding.

    Sorry if that's TMI!

  8. Hearing this makes me nervous with the arrival of this second one! Connor did the exact same thing. My mom and brother like to remind me that "once I got him straightened out, he was a completely different baby!" Thanks. A lot.

While you are down the right path of cutting out dairy, make sure you are also cutting out casein and whey. That is the milk protein cows give off. Something can be dairy-free but not free of the milk protein. Connor ended up having silent reflux and a milk protein sensitivity.

I would do the kangaroo hold in the Moby after he ate, which kept him upright for at least a half hour afterwards but allowed me to be hands-free. Use Mylicon at every feed as well.

Believe it or not, belly sleeping eases the pain of reflux so we allowed Connor to nap on his belly. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, prop the head of the crib mattress up a little bit to help him sleep. You can stick a pillow under one end or use a wedge.

    Good luck!

Connor was put on Zantac at a month old. It was like an instant relief. I remember my BIL who is an ENT met Connor for the first time at about 2 weeks old. I had just finished feeding him when he walked through the door. He knew right away it was reflux. It was so bad you could hear it happening :/ Unfortunately, the Ped wouldn't give medicine until he was a month old.

    Good luck!

  9. Bless!! I'm so interested in these tidbits of life with 2 since ill be there this summer!
I think it sounds like a dairy/soy allergy. I also think you could have your pedi test his poop to find out? Or could give a formula bottle with dairy sensitive formula just to see if he reacts differently?

  11. One thing I didn't see anyone mention is how often is he eating? Does he get a good latch? Sometimes swallowing too much air because they are eating when they're not really hungry or when they don't get a good latch causes throwing up and painful gas. My daughter had reflux too and some medicine helped a lot!

  12. This sounds like reflux but could be dairy. It's truly hard to tell. If you start noting red bloody-ish strings (can be very small) in his stool, then that is definitely dairy. Both my boys were diagnosed with Milk Protein Intolerance between 5-8 weeks, and I was dairy free with both for 6 months. After that, they tolerated it through nursing just fine. Neither SYT or PUT were fussy though, they both just developed blood in their stools. If you are going to try going dairy free, you also have to cut out "hidden" dairy like casein, whey, etc. It's a pain at first but it gets easier with time. I can give you lots of help in that department if you are going there!! Most docs will not make you wait until 1 month to start zantac- we prescribe it as early as birth all the time when it is needed. Zantac should help but may not take away all of the symptoms so if it helps but a month or two later, Jackson is still strugglinga bit, make sure to let your pediatrician know as there are stronger meds available, but most insurance companies make you try Zantac first.
