Me: (Handing Michael a magazine full of scrumptious cake recipes) Here honey, pick out any cake you want in there and I will make it for your birthday.
Michael: (Absently flipping through the pages) I think I want a Confetti Cake.
Me: A Confetti Cake? You mean an out of the box cake?
Michael: Yeah, that!
Me: (Handing him back the magazine) Well... don't you want to try one of these?
Michael: No, I want a Confetti Cake. It reminds me of home.
Me: Well, this is your home now and I don't make out of the box cakes, I make homemade cakes.
Michael: But, you asked me what I wanted?
Me: (Irritated that I don't get to try out a new recipe and a little hurt that he doesn't want one of my homemade cakes) Fine. You can have your confetti cake....AND your pre-made icing. (as if this is some kind of threat)
Michael: What? Don't get upset. You asked me what I wanted.
Me: Yeah, but....
Michael: Ok, I'll pick out a recipe...
Me: Oh no, it's too late now - your getting your box cake. It's done!
I guess we both just feel comforted in different ways on our birthday. His mom made out of the box cakes for him when he was young, while my mom made homemade. There is nothing wrong with either of these options. I was more upset because I was looking forward to trying out a new recipe and having something to kill time doing while he was away at work on Saturday. I just feel like a homemade cake adds just a little something to someone's special day. I think it says - someone cared enough about me to take the time to make this cake.
Anyways, I made his out of box cake and he was completely thrilled with it. Of course, we also reached an agreement that when his parents came up to celebrate his birthday this weekend, I would be making another cake of his choice which couldn't involve a box. He picked an Italian Cream cake, which I have never made before.
I'm happy, he's happy. It was a good day.
Talk about a classic man - woman argument! Any husband of some years knows that when the wife say "Fine!" it rarely is. :-D
ReplyDeleteGlad you got it all sorted.
Happy birthday to your hubby!
ReplyDeleteI love birthdays! I always do. To me, it's the one day of the year that's specially for me. I don't care if I'm getting old, it's still my day. And I also try to make birthdays special for the people I care about.
I'm with you on the classic homeade birthday cakes! Nothing says love like cake!
ReplyDeleteAww Happy Birthday to your husband!!! The cake looks good and you look good! :) Are you wearing that tube dress?????
ReplyDeleteI think everybody has different preferences on the birthday cake. I'm glad that you guys were able to work it out.
I had really a tough time on my 35th birthday. I wrote a post about it, but I was really depressed and sad - I couldn't let go of being 34! I'm good now though and proud to say I'm 35! haha.
Happy Birthday again to Michael!!!
haha you guys remind me of Josh and I. He is the same way! and I also made him a confetti cake for his birthday, except with chocolate icing!
ReplyDeleteI always grew up with box cakes, but I LOVE making stuff from scratch. it feels more special to me.
ReplyDeleteMulled Vine: Oh yeah, "Fine" is never a good word coming out of a woman's mouth.
ReplyDeleteChloie: That is very true - it should be a day all about you!
Sassy and Classy: Homemade cakes are the best!
Maki: Yes ma'am it is the tube dress! I will pass along the birthday message to Michael. Yeah this year I will be turning 25 and for some reason I am having a hard time with that. I'm sure I'll get over it though!
Ruggy13: What a coincidence! Michael probably would have preferred chocolate. I love rainbo chip though haha. Compromise right?
La Pixie: I agree that from scratch is more special - that's why I like doing it!
That is soooooooooooo a little fight that fiance and I have! It made me smile. :) Glad that the birthday turned out great. I'm planning on something special for Valentine's Day and I might do some baking myself!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! I agree with you on birthdays, and I've had a few more of them than you have. I have started my own tradition of throwing myself a birthday party. While it sounds somewhat narcissistic, the truth is that as I get older what I really want for my birthday is to hang out with my friends (and family too). No, presents aren't allowed typically -- although I might have a gift exchange this year so it can be everyone's birthday. That could be fun!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to your hubby. I totally agree with you about the whole birthday deal. I wish everyone's special days were like my 6th birthday! If only. My hubby doesn't like cake AT ALL. So that always throws a huge damper on my fun...:) but man, confetti cake? That is one of my weaknesses in life.
ReplyDeleteYour confetti cake looked good too, as did you and Michael!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your blog - especially your pictures. I came over from Live. Laugh.pull your hair out. This post reminded me of my last one, about pinching pennies.
ReplyDeleteAre you talking about Funfetti cake? Funfetti cake, a.k.a. my favorite cake in the universe and the only cake my poor husband gets on his birthday each year... that and no presents!
