I have to be honest, I was at a loss for a blog topic for today. Actually I thought of a good one when I came home today and checked the mail, but turns out it fit perfectly for Mama Kat's writers workshop which is on Thursday so I thought I better save it. Anyways, I came across a website called Write Source that had a list of topics that teachers could use to get their students writing and I came across this prompt (see title) listed under Grade 1. Even though this topic might seem a bit young for me, it did get me thinking about what exactly was under my bed at different stages of my life.
When I was little I used to think there were Gremlins under my bed. Remember that movie? It actually came out the year I was born. My dad always had a habit of letting me and my sister watch scary movies when we were probably a bit too young for them. I feel like I first saw this movie when I was 5. Now I haven't seen it in forever, but if my memory serves me correctly they started out as cute little fuzzy creatures that lived under this kids bed, but when you fed them or put water on them (something to that effect) they turned into ugly, scary creatures. This explains why I used to run from the hallway and jump into bed at night.
A few years later, you could find a very large version of a caboodle underneath my bed that had all sorts of crafty goodness in it. I had pipe cleaners, googly eyes, beads, felt, and an Indian bead loom. You could also find a huge assortment of crayons all grouped in their specific color groups from darkest to lightest and my collection of stamps and rocks. My grandfather used to collect rocks and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I remember going to one of those Renaissance fairs and being able to buy a pouch of gemstones. It was awesome.
When I was a teenager, you could find notes from friends and boyfriends. For a short period of time you might have found a wire bound notebook that served as journal. I threw that out after a couple of months due to potentially incriminating information that I thought my nosey mother might find. I also used the space underneath my bed to hide my well saved money after my sister and her friend had left me with several I.O.U.'s when they found my stash of money in my jewelry box.
In college you could find plastic containers full of notebooks and books from previous semesters. You could also find drawing pads and a variety of pencils, along with canvases and paints. There were even some pretty interesting clothing options for sorority and fraternity date parties and mixers. Later on, you could find a small trunk that housed all the notes, dried flowers, and movie stubs from my then boyfriend, now husband.
Today you would just find a roll of extra carpet, some old sorority T-shirts that I can't seem to part with and a plastic container of gift wrap. It seems as though now that I have a house of my own, I have stopped keeping all my good stuff under then bed. All of my favorite things are now out in the open for everyone to see.
What do you or did you used to keep under your bed?

Old magazines! Lots of them. :)
ReplyDeleteOMG Gremilins!!! They were really cute and evil:)
ReplyDeleteI just checked and there is a bat and a golf club under the bed.. It's JT's as his defensive tools. Kind of weird, I know...
Nothing! Our new bed has wood flooring so low that you can't keep stuff goodies underneath. Maybe a cat toy, but I'm not too sure.
ReplyDeleteI agree, no point hiding goodies under the bed when you have the whole house!
That was a great post!
ReplyDeleteWhat's under my bed? Hmm I don't know. Whatever Magda decides to hide there that week.
I loved this post.
ReplyDeleteMy entire life is pretty much stuffed in all the suitcases under my bed.
For the longest time the only thing that has been under my bed is a plastic container full of letters and souvenirs from my longest-term boyfriend ever. We dated from when I was 16 to 21 (Ha! And I'm 31 now!). I've dated many people since then, and the one I'm with now is a keeper, but I keep the box and its contents still. Go figure.
ReplyDeleteHi there, love your blog! I came over from Orchestrated Destiny after your funny comment about going backwards in life. I couldn't agree more with your concept.
ReplyDeleteI had pretty much the same things under my bed as you, sans the money (because I had it in my sock drawer). I also kept the Barbies I cut the hair off of, for fear of getting into trouble if they were found. Now I keep charcoal nude figure drawings from my college days that are too raunchy to hang but too precious to me to toss.
I keep all the cards and letters I received since I moved thousand of miles away from my family.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I loved your comment on my latest post about childhood memories! I was laughing so hard!
bodaat: I'm bad about keeping magazines as well. I have a plan of making a folder to keep the pages that I want, but so far there has been no action taken on that one.
ReplyDeleteMaki: Yeah, Michael has his bat beside our bed - real decorative you know.
Kaitlin: Our guest bed doesn't have space either. I do miss the storage space!
Bella: Your cleaning lady is just too sneaky!
Cheryl: That sounds like it would be interesting to go through!
Sassy Britches: Oh yeah, I can never throw away notes so I still have all of mine as well. They just aren't under the bed anymore haha.
Random Moments: Thanks for visiting - I hope you come back!
Chloie: I'm sure those are fun to go through. I'm glad you appreciated the comment haha. I have always remembered that email for whatever reason.
Omg a caboodle!! I used to keep all of my nail polish in mine!
ReplyDeleteRight now, I have a rubbermaid container full of summer clothes :)
Holy crap I almost just spit my drink out when I read the word caboodle!!!! I had a bright pink caboodle as a kid and forgot all about it until this very moment! hahahaha
